Tackling Global Warming From the Bottom Up

NYC Climate Convergence Sept. 19-21

Mark your calendar. The New York City Climate Convergence is September 19-21…!

Before corporate and governmental leaders arrive in New York City this September for the UN Climate Summit, System Change Not Climate Change together with the Global Climate Convergence will be laying the groundwork for an alternative summit, what we’re calling New York City Climate Convergence.

Our objective is to build and strengthen an environmental movement that addresses the root causes of the climate crises; a social-economic system that values profits above people, planet and peace. As the corporate captured UN proposes false solutions like carbon trading and sets meager greenhouse reduction targets, we will show the world what tackling global warming from the bottom up looks like.

Root of Global Climate Change: The Economic System

The NYC Climate Convergence identifies our economic system as the root problem of global climate change. So, here’s what they are calling for:

  • Millions of jobs in renewable energy, conservation, and public transit
  • A just transition from fossil fuels and nuclear power
  • New food, water, and sanitation systems
  • An emergency transition to a new kind of economy
  • Tax the rich and slash the bloated military budget

Powerful, revolutionary stuff… and so sensible – it can actually save the planet!

Even if you don’t plan to attend the Convergence, make sure your friends are aware of this important upcoming event, especially if they live near New York City.

Why?

Why are Republicans hurting America?

After watching FOX news for 1 hour, just 1 hour today, I’ve discovered that President Obama ( and it was hinted that he might not even be a ‘real’ citizen) and the Democrats are to blame for everything.

In fact, it has gotten so bad that Speaker of the House Republican John Boehner will be suing the President for issuing Executive Orders thus abusing his powers.

Interestingly enough, Speaker Boehner gave no specifics as to what powers the President was abusing……just that he was abusing them.

But Speaker Boehner was specific earlier in the day when he told the press that there would be no vote in the House on immigration reform this year.

And that’s when the President said he would act…

Fixing America’s problems, and the ‘Drunk in the Library’

The Secular Jurist

By Robert A. Vella

This week, Bill Moyers concluded his interview with Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz who said America’s worsening income inequality can be fixed through tax reform.  The underlying problem is a political one which both created the rise in inequality and stands as an obstacle to remedial solutions.  As he stated:

It’s amazing. And Americans have not yet grasped the reality of where we are. That our economic system has not been delivering for most Americans. And the fact that this has been true and that we have no longer a country where there’s opportunity, where the life prospects of a young person are so dependent on the income and education of his parents means that our view of the way our economic system works has to change.

My view is that these are not inevitable. These are not just the result of the laws of economics. You…
