162 State, National Groups and Individuals urge U.S. Senate to pass 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act

The Secular Jurist

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the 81st anniversary of the signing of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, 162 state and national organizations led by Public Citizen and Americans for Financial Reform today call on the U.S. Senate to restore a wall between ordinary banks and riskier investment banks.

In a letter, the groups ask senators to co-sponsor the 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act (S. 1282), a measure introduced by a bipartisan group including U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Angus King (I-Maine) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). S. 1282 now has nine Senate co-sponsors.

S. 1282 would make the banking system simpler and safer and help bring an end to the era of “Too Big to Fail,” the letter argues. It would do so by requiring the biggest banks to downsize along functional lines and by reducing the opportunities for them to use their government guarantees and subsidies to engage…

Pres. Obama Takes Big Step To Tackle Global Warming

From MoveOn.org,

President Obama just announced what the New York Times is calling “the strongest action taken by an American president to tackle climate change.”

This may be the best hope to tackle the climate crisis during the Obama presidency.

If the plan takes effect, this could be the single most important thing he does as president, the thing that our grandkids remember him for.

But that’s a big if- because giant polluters will do everything in their power to make Obama’s climate policy dead on arrival, with waves of misleading TV ads and bogus reports. So it’s incredibly important that we make our voices heard this week.

The EPA is now accepting public comments on the proposed plan. Let’s send a powerful statement of support for climate action. We’ll give reporters a running tally this week as thousands of people sign on, and we’ll share MoveOn members’ powerful personal appeals with them—so they know the President is not alone. We’ll deliver your comment, along with thousands of others, to the EPA headquarters in Washington next month.

Climate change is the challenge of our generation—and if we don’t meet it, it will become the nightmare of generations to come. Today’s announcement was a long overdue step in the right direction. But if we want to win, we’ve got to double our efforts. Today, the fight is on.

Share your comment about why you support bold action to address climate change. You can either write a personalized message, or use the text provided. Thanks!

Fight for Rhinos

“There is another menacing storm heading south through Africa and the first ominous drops of blood fell on SA soil this week. ” -Will Fowlds

With poaching taking its toll  on 383 rhinos so far this year, South Africa is not new to the epidemic. But with rhino horn worth twenty times more than ivory, elephants haven’t been poached in the country for a decade… until now.

elephant with sun In 2012 there were 16,700 elephants in Kruger National Park.

On Thursday, rangers found the dead bull elephant with missing tusks. They noted four sets of footprints leaving the park headed toward Mozambique.
Unfortunately this would be just “one more elephant” if it were Zimbabwe or Mozambique. But with the start of it in SA, this is devastating news. Proof of things to come.
“We have been alarmed about the elephant poaching happening in Central Africa and its more recent spread and escalation into East…

To House Republicans: Hands off Social Security and Medicare! (petition)

Photo courtesy of SalFalko via Flickr

From CredoAction.com:

The extremist Republican hostage-takers in the House who have irresponsibly and recklessly caused the government shutdown have now set their sights on attacking Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

House Republicans have a longstanding and very public record of relentlessly trying to slash Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare benefits.

So while it may not be surprising that House Republicans are putting cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits on their list of ransom demands, it is still deeply, deeply shameful. And we shouldn’t give them a pass on this.

Send a clear message to John Boehner, Paul Ryan and the rest of the House Republicans: “Hands off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits!”

To sign this petition, go to CredoAction.com.
